----------------------------------------------- NBW Book 2: Meditation
This is the second in a series of three short books by Geoff Hunt that covers the whole of the Buddha's core teaching in simple English and independently of existing 'Eastern' traditions. It was published in October 2009, and follows the first book which appeared in November 2009. Both are available at NBW sessions or mail order (discounted) from www.Amazon.co.uk using the search term 'New Buddha Way'. Book 3 should appear in April 2010. ---------------------------------------------------------
FESTIVALS 2010
27th May 2010: Vesak (Wesak) - NBW celebration on Sunday 30th May.
Vesak day is the most important annual festival for followers of the Buddha dharma. They assemble to celebrate the Buddha's birth, life and death. The three refuges are recited, and followers may bring simple offerings of flowers, candles and incense. These offerings are symbolic of the fact that just as the flowers will wither away after a short while and the candles and incense will soon burn out, so too life is precious but impermanent and brief.
Followers are encouraged to make a special effort to refrain from killing of any kind and to partake of vegetarian food for the day and refrain from all alcohol.
8th December 2010: Bodhi Day - NBW celebration on 5th Dec.
The Day of Awakening (Bodhi day) is recognised as the day that the Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. It is traditional to celebrate this event all over the world.
According to legend, a passing-by young woman Sujata offered a meal of rice and milk to the Buddha upon his awakening to help him regain his strength.
As part of our NBW practice we celebrated Day of Awakening in 2009 (on 6th December) by holding a shared vegetarian meal after our normal meditation session. Twenty-five people attended. We shall hold a similar celebration in December 2010. Watch this space.
