ZEN SESSIONS
WHEN? NBW puts on Zen sessions once a week, on Sundays 12.15 to 13.30 hrs at the Quiet Centre, University of Surrey. This follows the weekly Community Session (10.00 to 12.00 hrs) at the same venue.
FOR WHOM? The Zen session is intended for well-practised meditators. As a guideline: participants should have 1) attended our Beginners' and Newcomers' Class (which is a basic requirement for everyone attending NBW events) and 2) attended regularly at the Community Sessions at Guildford or Woking for about 1 year. If in doubt please contact Geoff at info@newbuddhaway.org Zen participants may either attend the Community Session first, or arrive only for the Zen session in the 15-minute window between 12.00 and 12.15. There is strictly no admission after 12.15 hrs. Those who have had Zen practice before but have not attended NBW events may first discuss attendance with Geoff at: info@newbuddhaway.org
FORMAT: The Zen session is a silent session with no instruction given. Participants will sit in rows (not a circle as in Community Session) Programme: - Chanting using the Japanese mokugyo ('wooden fish' slit-drum) - 45 minutes continuous sitting - A 10-15 minute reading from Mahayana texts, especially the 'Shobogenzo' and 'Extensive Record' of Dogen Zenji. For information on the mokugyo go to: Wooden Fish
